Workshops/Master classes on the fundamental topics of modern stagecraft have proven to be a valuable tool for instructing members of the Technical Theatre community in the core technologies of their field.

I provide training seminars on:

bulletBasic structural analysis for use on stage and in production. The presentation of this topic can be targeted toward scenic fabrication, toward rigging, or both. The goal is to get technical and design professionals thinking critically about what is happening with the loads and the structures they encounter in the course of their work backstage and in the shop.

bulletMechanics and control of stage machines. These seminars introduce the basic mechanics and control concepts that apply to the variety of motorized and powered devices that we use in the industry. Examples of these include deck winches, motorized rigging, hoists, and show automation systems.

bulletOther topics that are available as seminars include: electricity for the stage, lighting control, production/project management, CAD, and shop math.

The notes for  some previous master classes of these are available here:

bulletAutomated Scenery--two sessions given at the University of Illinois at
Urbana-Champaign in February 2000.
bulletHow to Chose the Mechanics
bulletTowards PC-based Control
bulletHorsepower and Machine Design--an introductory session at the USITT Conference in
Long Beach, CA in March of  2001.
bulletA presentation on calculating and sizing components titled:
Now that we’ve gotten started…
bulletHuman-Machine Interface--an advanced session at the USITT Conference in
Denver, CO in March of 2000.
bulletA presentation on the technology and practical details titled: PC-Based
Human-Machine Interface Development for Theatre Stage Machinery.
