Model for OthersBy developing an efficient and affordable system of moving large pieces of stage scenery, Steppenwolf will contribute a new array of production tools to the artistic community. This project will introduce new technology and procedures, and will alleviate the limitation of artistic choices to those that use conventional and often non-mechanized methods of designing scenic effects. Typically these conventional methods either limit the range of artistic expression or prove too time consuming, too expensive, or too intrusive in the context of the design goals and rehearsal opportunities available. Similarly, technicians have had some access to industrial control equipment for scenic effects, but have been faced with the prospect of tedious on-the-spot programming that is not well suited to live performance and the demands of the rehearsal process. The software/hardware interface developed for this project allows a flexible but theater-specific front end to these industrial controls by way of personal computers that in many cases are already a part of the backstage milieu. Ultimately, the technician will be able to tailor the Human Machine Interface to the production and the effect, consistently and seamlessly.
